AFTER SCHOOL TUTORING PROGRAM:
Our
after-school program caters to children from ages 5 through 17 or in
the first through the twelfth grade, and they are normally at no cost,
because we offer them to underprivileged families. We believe that underprivileged
children should have the opportunity to advance themselves by having
a good education. Studies have shown that children with after-school
tutorials are more likely to improve their grades than those who do
not. We have proof of some of our clients, who have moved their grades
up one to two levels over a three-month period.
In
our after-school program, we offer homework assistance, computer training,
tutorials, and extra-curricular activities. In our tutorials we focus
on English (reading and writing), Math, and Science. Our extra-curricular
activities promote art and culture, physical education, critical thinking,
and teamwork. We also encourage our clients to start considering college
early through our “think college” program.
In
addition to our normal curriculum, we develop focus groups that target
certain grades and interests or development needs. These groups include:

Reading
Club:
According to the US Dept of Education, for disadvantaged students, only
50% of 4th grade students whose parents are college graduates, have
above-average reading skills. Only 10% of 4th grade students, whose
parents did not complete high school, have above-average reading skills.
In the reading club, we encourage children to read aloud every day in
order to improve their reading skills. We take trips to the library,
hold reading club sessions, and organize activities that make reading
appealing to the children. Our goal in the reading club is to create
an appreciation for the written word.
Math
Club:
We intend to create opportunities for our clients to attend college
and have promising careers by providing them with advanced skills in
mathematics, science, and technology. We encourage our clients to make
good use of their after-school learning time, by developing these skills.
Through various enrichment activities in the math club, we encourage
our clients to further explore mathematics. We perform hands-on projects
and use computers and math inclined games to improve their math skills.

Arts Club:
Studies show that children can develop their basic and advance thinking
skills and diverse modes of thinking and learning through art. Literacy
studies go a long way in shaping a child’s ability to communicate
and express him/herself effectively. In the Arts Club, we focus on knowledge
and intellectual comprehension (critical thinking and problem-solving),
culture, communication, and creativity.
In the Arts Club, we:
• Provide opportunity in dance, music, theater and the visual
arts (through field trips and in-house activities);
• Encourage our clients to discover and develop their artistic
talents through mentoring programs
• Organize command performances, where children show off their
talents
Volunteer Opportunities
Our
volunteers take genuine interest in the development of our clients.
We are constantly in need of more volunteers as opportunities are created
for us to reach out to our communities. The more volunteers we have,
the more personal attention each child receives. All our clients go
to public schools, and the only time they get personal attention that
targets their individualized learning needs is when they attend our
program. Read more… (volunteer)

Parental Involvement:
According
to the United States Dept. of Education, thirty years of research shows
that family involvement in children’s learning makes a difference.
We believe that the family is the bedrock of any child’s development,
and that is why we involve parents and guardians in our after-school
program. It takes both the family and community to educate a child.
Our parents and guardians supervise and tutor our clients. They also
assist with the day-to-day operations that make our program successful.
Most importantly, because parents know the needs of their children,
we value their input. This is why we include families in program planning.
We are in the process of setting up parental advisory committees.
